EJ Hinojosa is the community candidate for Fresno County Board of Supervisors District 3, the heart of Fresno’s growing art scene. A Music Teacher at Gaston Middle School in Southwest Fresno, EJ and his wife Erin, a local theater teacher, live near Hamilton Elementary School with their three daughters Rosie, Ellie, and Daphne.

EJ is running for a seat on the Board of Supervisors to bring investment to Fresno County’s urban core investments. Investments such as healthcare and mental health services, art and music, business, humane strategies to address homelessness, and the construction of public spaces like libraries and public markets.

A revival of community and commerce are just around the corner. With county support, we can make it happen sooner than later.

What We Stand For

I will support increased funding for Fresno’s many cultural institutions like the Fresno Philharmonic, the Fresno Art Museum, Arte Americas, and the African-American History Museum. I will propose the construction of a new public library and cultural center in the Tower District. I will propose the establishment of a permanent public market in District 3, where Fresno’s independent vendors can operate in their own space away from traffic and away from brick-and-mortar business—imagine Pike Place in Seattle or the Original Farmers’ Market in Los Angeles. Fresno is full of independent and hard-working entrepreneurs. Let’s invest in them as part of a grassroots economic revival.

While I support repairs, I oppose the expansion of the 41, 180, and 99 freeways because it will lead to more traffic pollution along those corridors. I will instead support increased focus on roads and public transportation when allocating resources for transportation improvements. I support the expansion of public transportation, including high speed rail, to reduce carbon emissions. I would like to partner with willing Fresno County farmers and landowners to create natural wetlands throughout the County’s westside. These sites will serve many functions. They will be county parks where people can hike and camp, they will be havens for local flora and fauna, and they will be part of a groundwater recharge program to replenish the aquifers beneath our feet.

Right now Fresno’s housing market is facing a fundamental challenge: high demand and lagging supply. Let’s focus on building dense new housing in Fresno County’s existing communities rather than continue our region’s historic penchant for urban sprawl. Sprawl stretches our water and energy resources thin, creates pollution, and it all comes at the cost of farmland and natural habitats. For that reason I oppose the Southeast Development Area (SEDA) Specific Plan. Let’s give developers an incentive to build and invest in our existing communities where affordable rentals are in high demand, instead of deleting more farmland to create new communities.

Fresno County can support industrial growth while protecting the environment. I will create incentives for exciting companies to set up shop in Fresno County. Let’s make Fresno an attractive and opportune place for green agriculture technology, robotics, manufacturing, and the arts. Building all the things I’ve mentioned–libraries, housing, roads, markets, etc—that all creates lots of jobs in construction and engineering. Let’s get more dollars moving through Fresno County and let’s take our place among California’s most dynamic economies.

I will seek to build shelters and warming/cooling facilities in rural parts of the county for our neighbors who need help with the most basic survival needs. Currently Fresno County operates zero such shelters. I believe that’s a failure, and I plan to correct it. A strategy that focuses on building affordable housing and shelters, and promoting rehabilitation as the consequence for drug-related crimes, will set us on a course for a better future in Fresno County.
